Did you know that there's something called colour psychology? It's a practice which has been studied by scientists and researchers for decades, and has been applied in various fields such as marketing, art, and design. In fashion, colour plays a significant role in creating different moods and auras. Colour can be used to express one's personal style, (cultural) identity, and even the current emotional state of the wearer. This is often depicted in shows, adverts, and even music videos.

For example, think back to America's Next Top Model where one of the modeling challenges was to convey the seven sins, and the woman who portrayed jealousy wore green. We can also see this in Disney movies, for example, where there is a clear differentiation between good and bad in terms of lighter and darker colours whether that's the scenery or a character's clothing.

By understanding colour psychology, consumers can make more intentional choices about the colours they wear and promote. Additionally, it can be used to create positive and empowering environments that promote well-being and emotional balance.

Here are some examples of how different colors can affect our mood and emotions:

  • Red: This colour is associated with passion, energy, and excitement. It can also be perceived as aggressive or confrontational, depending on the context. It often symbolizes power or confidence, such as a red lipstick, or a red carpet, for example.

  • Orange: A a warm and energetic colour, orange conveys a sense of enthusiasm, creativity, and adventure. It can also be perceived as overwhelming or obnoxious, depending on the context.

  • Yellow: Yellow is generally considered a bright and cheerful colour that is associated with optimism, happiness, and creativity. It can also be perceived as too bright or overwhelming.

  • Green: This balancing colour conveys nature, calmness and is associated with nature, growth, and harmony. It can also be perceived as boring, or uninspiring. Like pink, green can be soothing and reduces stress and anxiety.

  • Blue: Blue is a calming and soothing colour that is associated with trust, loyalty, and intelligence. It can also be perceived as cold or aloof in some contexts.

  • Purple: Purple is a regal and luxurious colour that is associated with creativity, spirituality, and ambition. While it can also be perceived as pretentious or elitist, it is often used in marketing for fragrances, period dramas and various princess aesthetics.

  • Pink: Pink is a romantic and feminine, and can convey a sense of innocence, excitement and sweetness. Pink also symbolizes creativity, and depending on the hue, can also depict confidence . It's a calming color that can help reduce feelings of anger, aggression, and anxiety. Lighter shades of pink, like pastel pink, can create a sense of innocence and purity, while darker shades, like hot pink, can be more energetic and attention-grabbing.
